Trunk Length

The length of the trunk from the top of the shoulder to the sitting surface.

TrunkLength

How to measure

Application

Used in chair backrest and lumbar support design to ensure the backrest spans the full length of the seated user's back.

Posture

Sit upright on a firm, flat surface with back straight.

Landmark

Measured from the bony tip of the shoulder (acromion) down to the seat surface.

Tool

Tape measure.

Assistance

A second person should hold the tape end at the acromion while the other end rests on the seat surface.

Common mistake

Slouching compresses the trunk and significantly reduces the result.

API example

Request a predicted value for a 34-year-old woman at the 50th percentile in the United States. Adjust age, percentile, gender, and country to match your design scenario.
