Shoulder Breadth Biacromial

The breadth of the shoulders measured between the acromion processes.

ShoulderBreadthBiacromial

How to measure

Application

Used in clothing pattern design and medical skeletal assessment as a measure of underlying bone structure, independent of muscle bulk.

Posture

Stand upright, arms hanging relaxed at the sides.

Landmark

Measured between the two acromion points — the bony tips of each shoulder. This is narrower than bideltoid breadth.

Tool

Spreading caliper.

Assistance

A second person should locate both acromion points and position the caliper.

Common mistake

Confuse this with bideltoid breadth. Biacromial is bone width only. Bideltoid includes surrounding muscle and is always wider.
